The Federalists, of course, ate up Callender’s accusations against Jefferson with a spoon. His defenders wrote it off as fake news. Through the nation’s history, the story of Jefferson and Sally Hemings was considered to be one of the earliest examples of dirty politics in America, perpetuated by that dirtiest of hacks, a journalist (with Callender it was somewhat a case of guilty as charged; his demise came when he got falling-down drunk and drowned in the James River). But, as we know now, Callender was right. According to the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, “Thomas Jefferson fathered at least six of Sally Heming’s children. Four survived to adulthood and are mentioned in Jefferson’s plantation records: Beverly, Harriet, Madison, and Eston Hemings. Sally Hemings worked for two and a half years (1787–89) in Paris as a domestic servant and maid in Jefferson’s household. While in Paris, where she was free, she negotiated with Jefferson to return to enslavement at Monticello in exchange for “extraordinary privileges” for herself and freedom for her unborn children.”
